About Buck

(Buck circa 2013)

Buck is an aspiring writer whose accolades (to date) include top 10 and top 20% mentions from the Oxford Flash Fiction Masters annual contests (2024 and 2025), and is a winner in the 2024 Writersadvice.com flash fiction contests. His long form titles include Voluted (his first novel in the Historical genre) and Manila Dingo, an upscale crime mystery satire. He is currently working on collaborations, short stories, and his next novel (also mystery crime satire) in the “Dingo” series, Maestro Raven.

Buck Dodds is a golden moniker found on a hiking trail south of Bozeman and Big Sky, north of Yellowstone Park. Since Buck’s from Montana and has bucked odds since 1962, he Googled it and got nothin’. He tried it on for a while and it stuck, so he staked his claim.

With alter ego in place, he takes readers hiking. By that he means, life isn’t a nice garden stroll with every shade of your favorite purple. Along with his hiking partner and Ribald Brother, Toford Kroshus, they show you the gorgeous little purple flowers in the high mountains with their prose. Uncut and unfiltered, they bring to life language often forbidden in polite society today. It’s the stuff they heard from tough old timers they learned from. Now they’re the old ones.

Buck writes twisty, comic novels with raw bite that’s intentional and accessible to all adult reader levels. His personal vow is to have an invention or innovation theme in each novel he pens. Just for fun, he likes to include inventions that are interesting, but would likely never be patentable, or built. He’s got an arsenal of them.

For relief from this intensity, he writes flash fiction and is moving into shorts. Most are in search of a publishing home, so they are in a vault for keyholders only, ready for publication.

Then there’s the business side. As I transition from my boring, milquetoast author site, I’m building the Buck Dodds brand for posterity. If you stumbled onto me or are an agent directed to this site, think of it as the castle of a friendly old guy that likes to spin funny and thoughtful yarns. Come any time you like, and if you’re here now, it’s the ground floor. Buck’s still decorating.

Come again soon. Construction is done in the great room. As time progresses you’ll see more decoration, guest contributions by Toford and others, and you might get “bucked off” with a chuckle.
